About Us

History

Blackbird Early Years Music was founded in 2014 by former BBC Young Musician of the Year piano finalist, Helen Reid. Its aim is to bridge the gap between baby music classes and toddler singing classes, and more formal one to one instrumental lessons. Helen designed the 5 level curriculum, drawing on a wide experience of education work with ages 0-100.

Music Foundation Classes

The children are taught in small groups, of 3-6, which allows them to build confidence, as they get to know each other, and also to receive individual attention during the classes. Through over 50 original songs, by award-winning composer Dominic Sewell and actor Laura Trundle, and fun and engaging activities, the children are taught the rudiments of music, such as pulse, dynamics, rhythm and pitch, and can progress to reading basic rhythmic notation by Level 4. All the blackbird teachers are professional performers, who play live music for the children every week, something which is central to the musical experience of the children. Many of our children progress to taking instrumental lessons, including piano lessons, guitar lessons, drum lessons and violin lesso

Music School and Choir

In 2017, Helen and fellow teacher Douglas Watts, decided that, due to demand, they would expand to create a Music School in Southville. The Blackbird Music School offers children from reception year to year 3, the chance to spend a morning taking part in musicianship classes, drumming and Choir.

Drumming is led by Catherine Ring, a first class graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Musicianship classes maintain a ratio of no more than 1:8, and are full of engaging activities, with older children working both with the younger children, and on their own. And with expert and experienced conductor Douglas on board, Blackbird Children’s Choir gives children the wonderful opportunity for communal singing, from the age of 4+. Find our more here.

Blackbird Early Years music was created from a real passion to provide the most positive start possible to children’s musical journey and we look forward to taking that journey with your children!
